Our Words: A small dictionary for a rather large story.

Some words belong to the farm. Some belong to the book. Some belong to Paolo, Trude, or the places we've travelled. And some simply refused to stay out of the story.

Arranged by story, rather than alphabetically.

Because apparently that's how we remember things.

Our Story

HELP!
An exclamation used when you've accidentally started a farm shop, written a book, collected too many tins of olive oil, and decided that all of this should somehow become a website.

Also on another note, see:

The Beatles, YouTube is a great place for starters. Great Song.

And a rather familiar holiday feeling. See also:

Chevy Chase. As above so below - many a trailer is readily available.

A CUNNING PLAN

Balzac once wrote about ambition; we just wanted an excuse to buy more Pecorino.

BJØRKE ØSTRE
An 18th-century farm, currently housing an unreasonable amount of olive oil.

THE BOOK
Technically not finished. On paper, getting there. Apparently this is not stopping us from building a website about it.

FARM SHOP
A small shop containing food, art, stories and probably more cheese stories than stringly necessary.

Currently operating on high hopes, strong coffee, and an unreasonable inventory of gold-medal olive oil (distinguished nose approved).

MANGALITZA
A Hungarian pig with excellent taste. Or perhaps excellent taste because it is a Hungarian pig.

OLIVE OIL
A perfectly reasonable thing to collect. Especially when travelling in Puglia. The problem only begins when the suitcase refuses to close.

PECORINO
Cheese. Important enough to make a detour for. Especially when the detour takes you to Italy.

PAOLO
Musician, food obsessive, Father of Cheese, traveller. Instigator of many a detour.

TRUDE
Artist, colour hunter, co-conspirator.

PUGLIA
Southern Italy. Olive trees. Dangerous levels of good olive oil. Proceed with caution.

Composition in coffee

THE THREE
Olive oil. Cheese. Coffee. The three things upon which civilisation apparently rests.

SACRED BROWN BEANS
Coffee beans. Obviously. But apparently not merely coffee beans.

One, two, three, four... some beans.

We have now moved on from advanced mathematics*

* ADVANCED MATHEMATICS

The art of counting beans, managing stock, or calculating farm shop finances. Characterized by methods closely resembling Baldrick's legendary bean-counting system, where exact numbers are viewed more as a flexible guideline.

COMPOSITION
Something you do with music. Apparently also something you do with coffee. The important thing is hitting the exact note.

THE DISTINGUISHED NOSE
Useful for finding truffles. Also apparently useful for finding the best coffee beans.

ITALIANS

According to Paolo, better at smelling things. Also better at walking in high heels. We make no further claims.

The Chieftain of all cheeses

CHEESE
Obviously.

CHEESE FATHER
Paolo. See also: refrigerator surveillance.

THE CHIEFTAIN OF ALL CHEESES
The Worm Cheese from Sardinia. Small, cunning, and apparently not one to be taken lightly.

We suspect it had a cunning plan...

CAMERINO
A place where buffalo mozzarella apparently arrives by the crate.

BASS DRUM
A percussion instrument. Also, apparently, an acceptable method of international cheese transportation.

The Holy Oil

THE HOLY OIL
Olive oil. The Holy Grail. The elixir of life itself. Apparently, ordinary olive oil was never going to be enough.

If you will not show us the Holy Oil, we shall take it by force! We cannot confirm what happened next...

HOLY GRAIL
What you call olive oil when you've been looking for the perfect one for long enough.

THE PAOLO OIL
Olive oil so good that people wanted it by the litre. And perhaps a little bit more than that.

BLASPHEMY
Mixing cheese and fish. According to Paolo, quite literally swearing in church.

THE GODFATHER
Organised crime, family, Sicily — and, apparently, a five-litre jug of olive oil.

MEDICINE FROM HEAVEN
Olive oil, according to the drummer and Father of Cheese. Apparently more effective than butter.
